She's not dead, folks

The Stack is simply taking all her time.

In addition, she's busy recovering from students' whining such as, "I have a bad participation grade?! True, I didn't say a word all semester in class, but I deserve an 'A' because I was passionately listening." That's a direct quote, I kid you not.

Damn students.

Ok, I'm not gonna lie here. I hate participation grades. I can't stand to listen to my classmates give their pretentious (and often INCORRECT) input on whatever we happen to be studying at the moment, just so they can be sure to get their participation points for the day. I feel like I'm wasting my time in class because no one is really adding anything to the discussion. They just need their points.

Obviously students are students the world over - I work at an Australian university, and come results release time, my friend who runs academic records had a very angsty student wail at her on the phone:
"It says on my results that I failed a subject - but that can't be right - because I really really ENJOYED that subject!"

If these kids put as much work into their assignemnts and participation as they do into their arguments for a better grade, they wouldn't need the arguments.

I tried to vote, but they won't let me finish setting up my "account" with them. I can't get them to send the confirmation email. Any tips?

I second that emotion...

I told you give 'em all "A"s. It isn't like you are going back next semester.

Plus, "listening passionately" deserves creativity points.

"Passionately listening"? That's the single funniest thing I've read all day...

Wait...

"It says on my results that I failed a subject - but that can't be right - because I really really ENJOYED that subject!"

THIS is the funniest thing I've read all day.

While I'm no instructor or professor, I do work in academia, so I know exactly what students can be like. Worse yet, alums who think you owe them the world. Geez.

I hear you, celinas, which is why I don't have participation "points." I just ask the students to contribute to the discussion regularly throughout the semester as a small part of their effort grade, and have a whole bit in the syllabus about the dangers of "negative particpation" which it sounds like you've been experiencing.

RE: confirmation email... Josh The Pilot says his took a bit to be delivered. I think they take about 24 hours, if you can find a way to fill your life until then :) Thanks so much for voting, dear The Readers.

Also re confirmation email, I had trouble with mine and emailed them. They said they've been having some trouble with yahoo, so they manually activated my account. You may also want to check your spam folder.

MB, you rock.

Can you come teach a class at ASU? Tempe could use a couple of instructors with some common sense. ;)
