The Nerd Test

I find this highly unsettling:

This is frankly the first time in my life that any entity, when presented with the opportunity, chose to not call me a nerd. I don't quite know what to do here. I know about four people, and two of them are directly responsible for my birth! I worked for NASA! I own action figures! I took an Internet test about being a nerd, and then I posted on my blog about it!

Then there's this news, which is further confirmation of said nerd-dom, as well as confirming my grand life design of whining at every turn.

Wait-- maybe I need to take the Loser Test...

by the way, you're reading a blog post about a person you don't know who took an Internet test about being a nerd, and then posted on her blog about it, assuming she is indeed a she at: mb@blondechampagne.com

Well, not only am I reading a blog of a person I don't know who happened to take a nerd test and post it for us to see. I also clicked on the link as soon as I was finished reading said blog.

I think the test might be faulty. This is, in fact, the first time I have not been called a nerd when the opportunity arose as well. Actually, I scored a 6 and was given the comment, "definitely not nerdy, you are probably cool."

Probably cool? PUH-lease! haha

65.

I don't understand how I've crushed MB, who's been to a Mystery Science Theater 3000 convention, and I own a handful of "Weird Al" CD's.

Then again, they seemed preoccupied with my knowledge of the periodic table of elements, and chemistry was by far my favorite science subject in high school and the only one I ever took in college. So I know what the chemical symbol Mn stood for.

Carah the BFFE: I got a 43, MB. I'm only lightly nerdy. Is that because I actually know the IP address for our computer? I liked the part of chemistry where we learned what elements made which color in fireworks. Manganese makes a gorgeous purply color. :)

I just had to share this
Off The Mark Comic. The second one down. You just know George Lucas would do this.
(And I scored a 59 on the nerd test, which is acurate by my measure, though I agree with Mike, a nerd test without a MST question isn't a nerd test.)

Damn. 76. I thought I'd outgrown it.

41 !!!

41 ????????

Slightly nerdy?? I thought I was just SMART !!!!

Damn, gotta go buy a protractor now....

Hmmm...I think it's a faulty test. I got a 13 and I KNOW I'm a nerd. (I've got the high school pictures to prove it.)

It seems that there may be different levels of nerdom. Or maybe different nerd groups. You have your Trekkies, your Math Geeks, your Mad Scientists, your Computer Nerds, oh, and we can't forget the "I play D&D, live in my parents' basement and am obsessed with the internet" Nerds.

I'm sure that I've barely scratched the surface of the nerd class system. (How nerdy is that?!) Someone nerdier than I should get a grant and conduct a study.

Doddy said...

Actually I think mand_a_lion is onto something here. The test is definetly to qualify as a math/computer nerd (or geek has-been - that's me I think).

I have never been to a Star Trek convention, didn't like MST, so there is definetely a whole other class out there where I like totally wouldn't qualify as a nerd. So, I' nominate myself as a matherd though I think I'd sound better as a mateek.

37, I'm a wannabe

Nerdy is as Nerdy does.

59... But I do think that is test is way biased. Let's face it, the movie The Revenge of the Nerds proved to us than there's MORE than just one kind of nerd. There are nerds who dig Star Trek and can almost think in a binary fashion, others prefer Tolkien and philosophy and wouldn't know how to rip a CD if their lives depended on it!

Only 88, I gotta make some changes.

okay mary beth, it's your graphic designer here... hi! I've lurked before, but this one begged a comment.

I got a 35: "a nerd wannabe, not nerdy, but definitely not hip." they left out the part of the quiz where "going out with friends on friday" means going to a coffeehouse and each doing the entire crossword puzzle and the sudoku from the newspaper, with a game or two of cutthroat speed scrabble afterwards. instead of whatever it is the cool kids do. *shrugs*

also, I am artoo, which is pretty great.

you are selling a TON of books... does everyone reading this have theirs yet??

shameless plug. take care. ;)

hmm... sorry about the screwy html-ing before. forgot to mention that I got the postcard at work today, thanks!

Woohoo!!! 93!!!

I knew playing with Linux would pay off one day. Starting off as a chem major and ending up in comp sci didn't hurt, either.

59, Bay-bee. Read it and weep. Me, I'm going to watch Zigfield Follies for the umpteenth time, solve a differential equation, and get to bed before 10 pm. It is Friday night, after all!

Lynn, The AirForceWife said...

Okay, I got a "1, Despises Nerds", and the quiz made me feel totally stupid. I guess I'm just nerdy about non-tested stuff. Because I KNOW that I'm not cool!

I got a 45 - slightly nerdy. I got a bachelor's degree in Math. This test is definitely measuring math nerdiness. I made my husband (a college English professor) take the test, and he only scored a 12!! Up until now he thought of himself as 'nerdy'. Now he's changed it to 'artsy'.

AND I'm Emperor Palpatine . . .

RPJ, I totally agree with you! I scored a 27 (nerd wannabe). I'm definitely nerdy in some catagories, but not in others. Back in school I was an athlete, including being a cheerleader, very anti-nerdy. However, I had nerd-esque GPAs in both high school and college, and a super nerdy SAT score.
Now, being a pilot can be either nerdy or cool. At the University of Airplanes, pilots on the flight team were considered nerds and pilots on the cheerleading team were the cool kids, although my roommate and I kinda screwed that up. He was the flight team president, but generally considered a cool jock, and I was the cheerleader captain, but a total nerd (in my opinion), especially at parties and in the classroom.

I think my 94% is a little more disconcerting...

Dantelope said...

Oh dear lord, a 93%. I'm going to need to restart my therapy...

Anonymous said...

53 - lightly nerdy here. Any knowledge of the periodic table does seem to affect the results in a big way, since my computer engineer husband just got a 28. I guess ChemEs are just more nerdy. ;-)

Jenib said...

Dantelope...I am thinking that this test does not measure the "dork factor" which (I feel) is quite different from "nerd". What do you think?

Dantelope said...

Yeah that's just what I need, jenib, a dork factor test!

Cuz you KNOW I'd pass that...

Why don't we just dress me up in a tutu and call me pretty while we're at it?

Then I can live out my life long fantasy of being laughed at in front of millions of people...

Oh... damn...

Cbell said...

Thank God. An 18. Whew... I got a little nervous there.

grammar_queen said...

This test is skewed to the math/science/computer science end of the nerd spectrum. So how on earth did a former English major wind up with a 59? I guess I've picked up a lot more from Trivial Pursuit and PBS specials than I realized.

Jenib said...

Dantelope,

Are you still willingly living in Michigan?

Score one point...

Dantelope said...

I'm being held here against my will by the Dragon of TSO. I'll be in the highest tower. Rescue me!

This is only a science and computer nerd test. It mentions nothing of model trains and match book collections. Clearly it's flawed.

kelebek }{ said...

Hmm "mid-rank nerd 75" I can live with that I suppose. I tend to dabble in all sorts of nerdy things, but never really picked one to specialize in. Well, except Journalism (my major), but that decreases my cool nerdiness factor, sigh.

gryphonesse said...

hey MB, just so ya know,

10% scored higher (more nerdy), and
90% scored lower (less nerdy).

Supreme Nerd. Apply for a professorship at MIT now!!!

It's okay, we'll still call you a nerd - we're not exclusive!!
