> Mean Dude From “The Paper Chase”

My Philosophy professor in college was a total Professor Kingsfield. 99% of the students were terrified of him, in fact he scared my mom so badly when she went back to college that she dropped out of his class in under a week.

I loved him, though. I'd take two of his classes back to back - one at 9:00 a.m. and one at 10:00 a.m.- but would only go to one of the two classes each day. (There was this non-stop, can't miss card game going on in the cafeteria...)

Since Professor Scary knew I was cutting one of his classes each and every day, he'd always try to catch me unprepared, but never did. Those were some of the best verbal jousting matches ever. I really miss him.

Most of the Scary Profs are the best ones. Which is why my students call me by my first name and mock the candy I offer them in my office.

How about Mr. Hand from Fast Times at Ridgemont High... Loved him! I just love it when he shows up at Spicoli's house at the end of the year as Spicoli is planning to go surfing in Mexico forcing him to make up for all the time he wasted in history class. I am a history teacher and this is my fantasy!!

Notwithstanding your potential freakout, Dead Poets Society was a magnificent movie, Robin Williams was brilliant in it, and he should have won an Oscar but he got jobbed in favor of Daniel Day-Frickin'-Lewis.

I have Space Camp on DVD - that movie rocks!

And what about Mark Harmond in Summer School?

babylemur, I wanted to have Mr. Hand in the article! Anybody who puts the smackdown on Sean Penn, even in a fictional sense, is immediately my hero. Alas, word count restraints prevented his inclusion, and it was him or Yoda. Mr. Hand had to go.

I cannot believe you left out "Stand and Deliver", Dead Poet's Society", "Mona Lisa Smile" and "Dangerous Minds"!!!

The ones you have in their place are a complete joke compared to those ones.

Actually, that was kind of the point of the article, anon. My editor and I wanted to do something unusual and unexpected, since just about every article and list you see about "teacher movies" has those characters you just mentioned. We were eager for people to see the issue in another light, and I wanted to emphasize that you don't have to be in a classroom with desks to be a teacher.

I can't believe you forgot Severus Snape, after rooting for him on a previous MSNBC article!

No, I didn't forget him-- he just rated his own article :) Besides, I consider him more of a book teacher than a movie teacher.

I was always fan of that guy in Breakfast Club, what was his name?
I think I need to rent more movies because I only knew a handful of the movies mentioned in the article.
I second mb on Snape, he is a book teacher really. But Alan Rickman, oh my!

A witty and wonderful read as always, MB :).

PS: To entwine the teacher theme with the new little bublet ... they have onesies now that say, "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner". Too cute :). My Boy and I are planning to start trying for a family at the end of the year and that - as well as an already bought Austin Powers teeth dummy (pacifier) - are going to be the fashion styles we inflict on our very own bublet one day :). Just bought a little baby t-shirt with an Elvis theme that says, "It's alright, Mama" :).

** "Just also bought", the latter comment should have said :).

It is my understanding that the lecture Ben Stein delivers in the film was completely unscripted. Man. Boring is one thing. Boring on cue?Thattakes talent.

Hilarious! I love Ben Stein. He is the top celebrity I'd love to have a cup of coffee with. I also really wanted to be on his game show.

That was a great article.
