"Mint and Chocolate, a marriage of flavors made in heaven."

Amen to that. I hope you enjoyed it. Unlike me, you made it through your Lenten sacrifice. Congratulations.

I just HAD to comment in a post about mint chocolate chip ice cream. The one and only ice cream flavour.

I once gave up chocolate for Lent. It was stressful. I included everything even remotely chocolatey, and the only time I lapsed was by complete accident when a friend offered me an M&M in passing down a hallway and I ate it without thinking. Didn't even realise until a couple of hours later what I'd done!

I'm very impressed that you got through it, and you made the perfect choice by ending the 'fast' with mint choc chip ice cream! Well done!

I gave up the same thing I do every year- Christianity. This year I also refrained from worshiping Pagen gods- you know: Mano, Mooby or anything Shinto...but I did have meat on Fridays, being born Jewish makes this very easy.
Seriously now: "40 days of repentance- even in sin Christians pay retail" - Jon Stewart

humor me though- what is the deal with Christianity and repentance? It seems to me you can do just about anything (sin) and all you have to do is confess to a Priest, do some Hail Marys or Our Fathers(from my understanding these are standard [short/simple] everyone knows them prayers)and you are forgiven. What does Christianity hold about right -morally just- action? And what about motivation?
How much does the why matter?

My Congrats MB! I gave up cake for Lent (I am not strong enough to give up all sweets yet...baby steps) and your Lenten sacrifice gave me strength. Now, as I celebrate a successful Easter by eating my way through an entire Funfetti sheet cake, I applaud you and your choice of ice cream. 40 days without makes it all the sweeter!

Hi joe,

It's not that simple. All men are called to do their best to avoid sin, but we are human and sometimes we fail. Christian forgiveness is not a "get out of jail free" card, because boiled down, sin is our own, free, conscious decision to turn away from God. In so doing, we hurt ourselves and others.

For Catholics, we go to Confession because in doing so, we humble ourselves to apologize to God as well as our fellow man (in the form of the priest.) The confession is not valid unless there is true repentance for the sins. Confession is not really there not for God so He can feel great about Himself, but for us; it ritualizes the sacrament and gives us a marked opportunity to start anew. And confession is also a counseling session in which the priest acts as spiritual advisor, helping us to look for ways to do better.

Penances (your reference to prayers) are not "punishment" per se, but a means of eradicating the root of sin. Kind of like an ecclesiastical weedkiller. Penance is not always a bunch of prayers-- sometimes it is seeking forgiveness from someone you've wronged, a pledge to give up a harmful activity such as pornography, or a direction to return stolen property. It depends on the priest, the penetant, and the sin.

As for "morally right," the ends never justify the means. At least that's what I was taught, and what I have found through my experiences. But sometimes certain Church leaders make a liar of my 11th grade morality class teachers.

Thanks, BW, those sound delightful. I bet you Aussies know how to do chocolate, too.

Mint and Chocolate is definetally the best food pairing known to man. I once had a boyfriend that DIDN'T LIKE! mint chocolate anything. I knew right then that the relationship was doomed.

I don't like mint or chocolate (cake or ice cream, but love Snickers), but MB and I have managed to stay together, probably because I've introduced her to strawberries-n-cream Frappuccinos!

JTP: I'm glad you two could work it out, and I'm sure the strawberries-n-cream Frappuccinos were a huge help! (Never been to a starbucks, but after the recent post, I might just have to check it out.)
